Beyond the Finish Line: The Sustainable Commitment of the Marathon Beneva de Montréal

Running for a cause that goes beyond athletic performance: this is the commitment the Marathon Beneva de Montréal makes to our planet. Through concrete and measurable actions, we continuously work to reduce our environmental footprint and maximize our positive impact on ecosystems. Because every step counts, both on the track and in our collective fight against climate change.
A Carbon-Neutral Event That Goes Further
The Marathon Beneva de Montréal is not just a major sporting challenge; it’s also a responsible event that fully assumes its environmental impact. Thanks to our partnership with Planetair, a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting climate change, we are a carbon-neutral event.
How do we accomplish this in practice? First, LCL Environnement meticulously quantifies the greenhouse gas emissions generated by our entire event. Then, we offset all these emissions through Gold Standard certified projects – the international benchmark for voluntary carbon offsetting.
Local and International Impact Projects
Our commitment is realized through supporting transformative projects at both international and local levels:
Internationally, we support initiatives in Nepal that improve quality of life while reducing carbon emissions, including:
– Installing more efficient cooking stoves in marginalized communities, reducing wood consumption by 50% and improving air quality
– Water purification systems that save families from having to boil water
We also contribute to renewable energy projects such as wind farms and solar installations that replace electricity produced from fossil fuels.
Locally, we support Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC), which protects more than 1,700 hectares in the Greater Montreal area. These natural spaces, spread across islands, at the foot of the Monteregian Hills, and in the peatlands of the Upper St. Lawrence, constitute essential ecosystems for biodiversity and act as natural carbon sinks.
An Ecosystem of Committed Stakeholders
Our environmental approach doesn’t stop at offsetting. We mobilize our partners and collaborators:
– Our exhibitors are invited to do their part by offsetting their GHG emissions at a rate of 1.5% of the rental price of their booth.
– Our participants can choose to forgo their medal and instead donate its equivalent value to Planetair, thus transforming a personal symbol of accomplishment into a concrete contribution for the planet.
Running for Positive Impact
The Marathon Beneva de Montréal demonstrates that a major sporting event can not only limit its ecological footprint but also become a vehicle for positive change. By integrating sustainable development at the heart of our organization, we hope to inspire other events and show that sport can be a powerful catalyst for environmental action.
With each stride, we move together toward a greener future. While our individual goals are measured in hours or minutes, our collective goals are measured in tons of carbon avoided and hectares preserved for future generations. 💜🌿
